New Year, New Decade!

Wow! Has it really been 10 years since we panicked over what Y2K might do to us? Hard to believe how fast time travels. And boy have we seen it move at the speed of light! More than I wanted it to. Hard to think that at the end of the next 10 years, I will be married 30 years and have two grown children. Yikes!

So in the meantime (which will be a blink of an eye) I plan to FOCUS on the positive side of life such as PEACE, LOVE, and HAPPINESS! And of course, a whole lot of Gabbin', Gigglin' and Grinnin'! I'm sure I'll fit a little bit of Groovin' in as well. This girl has always gotta dance! Click here and do just that.

Wishing you and yours the very best in 2010!

Gab at ya in the new year!

It's NOT about the gifts...it's about the MEMORIES!

Can you believe that another Christmas has come and gone?! And what a beautiful white Christmas it was! I can't remember the last time that Texas has had a white Christmas.

Christmas morning was a complete blur in my house. Everyone knows the drill...you spend HOURS wrapping presents, only to have them ripped open in 7.3 seconds. I use to be up into the wee hours of Christmas morning wrapping gifts. A few years ago, I told myself to start wrapping the gifts as I buy them, so I would not be up late. This has worked out great! However, the destruction time is still the same, if not quicker.

This year, for the first time in a very long time, Cactus & I both had our siblings in for the holidays (minus his oldest sister). His youngest sister and her husband came in from D.C/New York; my sister, her husband and their two kids came in from the Metroplex. My brother and his family live here, so this made for a great time for all of us to spend time together.

Travel was crazy for them, however. My sister-in-law was lucky to arrive. Anyone that lives in Abilene, knows that if it rains here, the airport shuts down. So...when the snow arrived, we just knew that Ann and Jim probably would not make it into Abilene. Surprise, surprise...they made it! They were five hours late...but they made it! Every flight into Abilene was cancelled, EXCEPT the one that they were coming in on. Luckily, my sister and her family were not scheduled to arrive until Saturday morning. However, her husband's family had scheduled to get together Christmas day. Unfortunately, his mother was snowed in in Wichita Falls, and could not make it to their house. I am telling you, not only does our town shut down in snowy weather, but the whole state. People were stuck on I-20 for up to 9 hours; even sleeping in their cars. I think I would have chewed my arm off!

Everyone made it safely. Christmas day we spent with Cactus' sister and husband; enjoying the looks on our children's faces as they opened their gifts (that which we could see through the tornado of wrapping paper!). Saturday was the day for my family to get together. We chose to meet for lunch. This was the first time in over 8 years that we have all three gotten together. We had a great time! This just proved that the spirit of the season is alive and well. It was not about the gifts, but the time spent together talking about "old times"; like how my sister and brother use to gang up on me! The "baby" of the family!

The past few days were fast and furious, but also very rewarding. I witnessed my children getting along (and isn't that the best gift of all?); new marriages flourishing; siblings reconnecting and extended family members getting to know each other better. I am totally drained, but totally blessed! I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and wish you a happy new year!

Keep on Gabbin', Gigglin' and Grinnin'!

It Was the BEST of Times...It Was the WORST of Times!

Charles Dickens wrote that many years ago in "A Tale of Two Cities". I think I now know what he meant! The past five days have been the best for me and the worst. (In all honesty, I have a great life...can't complain...just want to add some effect!).

Last Thursday, the Schroeder clan was scheduled to travel 14 hours to Telluride, Colorado, for our annual skiing trip. We usually take this trip with our friends the Nelson's, but they had just spent 3 weeks in London and did not feel they could make this trip (I am CRYING for them!). I was not as excited about this trip as I have been in the past, for several reasons. One...the Nelson's would not be there...two...we had to drive...three...we would not return home until the 22nd of December...four...we had to drive...five...we had to drive!

So, much to my surprise, Cactus had chartered a plane from Abilene Aero to fly us to and from Telluride! YEAH!!!! He was trying to surprise (and make happy) all of the women in his life. We had done this many times before, but we all thought this was not possible this year with the bad shape that the economy was in and the down turn in the oil business. Did everyone hear the screams coming from the car when we pulled into the airport? I am just now regaining my hearing from this! I know I complain about Cactus (as we all do about our spouses), but he REALLY is a great man. He knew that I was stressed about this trip; what with shopping, cooking and not just my family visiting this year, but his, too. That is why he decided to fly instead of drive. That knocked 12 HOURS OFF OF OUR TRIP!!!! We were not suppose to be in Telluride until Friday at about noon...we arrived there at about 4 p.m. on THURSDAY!

We get to our hotel (which we have stayed in 3 times before), and they only have us for ONE room on Thursday, not the TWO that we had booked. I show my confirmation e-mail and the front desk manager goes to the "back to see what she can do." She returns and tells us that since they are at fault, we are being upgraded to a penthouse suite, with full kitchen for about HALF of what we were going to spend on the two rooms that we have already booked. AND...would we be interested?! REALLY?! NO...we will all just cram into the king room that you had us in! DUH! Isn't life grand?

SCREEEEECH! Now for the worst of times! As I am standing dealing with the room issue, my 16 year old comes up to me and tells me that Elle is in the bathroom throwing up. I will not go into details at this time, BUT...it is not good! I go check on her and see that...well, never mind. Housekeeping is called. She says that she feels better and goes downstairs with her dad to get her skis, while I meet the bellman in the room. While I was unpacking, Delaney, my 14 year old, runs into the room and tells me that Elle threw up in the middle of the hallway; I grab the first thing I can (a small bowl) and head out to the hall...again...housekeeping is called. I will now give you the Reader's Digest version...I stayed in that night...Cactus took the two older ones to eat...this went on until about 4 o'clock Friday morning...I slept on the couch!

I am sure that it was just altitude sickness, but just in case, Elle and I stayed in the room on Friday, while Cactus took the other two skiing (which is NOT such a bad thing). Cable, DVD, and wine...what more could a girl want? This had never happened to her before, but I think all of the excitement, plus the thin air got the best of her. Thank goodness we arrived a day early!

The rest of the trip was WONDERFUL! All of our girls are amazing skiers; but Elle is FEARLESS! She just points her skis down and meets you at the bottom! At one point, she got off the lift skiing BACKWARDS!

The advantage to a private plane is that you can come and go at your own schedule; the disadvantage, is that when you are in an area like we were in, you have to constantly check the weather. So...Sunday afternoon, our pilot, Greg (he is the BEST!), called and said that we would need to head home on Monday afternoon, instead of Tuesday morning. At first, we were all disappointed, but then, we realized that we had been able to ski the same amount of days we would have if we had driven. Crises diverted! The good news is, I was able to get home a day early...complete my Christmas shopping without a great deal of stress (groceries, too)...and Gab with Nan tomorrow at 1 p.m. CST (tune into www.highvoltageradio.com)!

I had a great time with my family. All three of the girls got along...MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME!...we rested...ate good food...and enjoyed our time together. Trust me...time is VERY valuable right now. I realized on this trip, that Katie will be leaving for college (probably NOT in Texas), in a year and a half! So, please take this time to hug your children, your spouse, your significant other, your parents, grandparents and all of your family members. Don't just hug them now...but everyday, because...It's a Wonderful Life! I know... I live it every day!

Merry Christmas and God Bless!

P.S. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Brittany Murphy at this time!

DON'T MESS WITH WEST TEXAS WOMEN!!!

That's right boys and girls....Don't mess with us West Texas Women! Heck, don't mess with ANY women...Right Tiger? Okay enough about Tiger!

Dear 'Ol Abilene High in Abilene, Texas has made it all the way to the state finals and play this once in a lifetime game this Saturday. Not only are the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, yada yada yada attending the game, but I do believe this whole town will shutdown and head to the Alamodome in San Antonio. It's been a long drought since we've made it this far...50+ years! To say the least we are darn tootin' proud of these boys!!! And we are not gonna miss it! Especially not a mom of a senior on this team! Well, believe it or not, that almost happened. Her employer was not going to let her have this day off to attend this grand event! YES, you heard me right!!! She even offered to work 1/2 the day and then drive down to San Antonio. OH NO they said! You will work or you won't have a job! REALLY??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Oh yea...left out the most important part....this precious, proud momma has worked for them for 28 years...28 YEARS!!! Give me a freakin' break!

WELL, little did this employer know... the word got out about this and it was GAME ON! Be very aware of the social media world we are living in...right Tiger? (sorry just had to say it again) because all it took was for a very dear friend to post this little known event on FB and well.....the company she worked for got calls, their corporate office got calls, local radio & tv got calls and yes yours truly gabbed about it from the minute the story broke on our GLOBAL internet radio show and well you get the picture. Like the title of this blog says...DON'T MESS WITH WEST TEXAS WOMEN! We are truly a force to be reckoned with, and I am extremely proud to be a part of this group! NEVER EVER underestimate the power of women because it WORKED! The company reinstated her, she goes back to work tomorrow, and has Saturday off for the BIG GAME!

Alright boys...we won our game...it's your turn now! Go make your mommas proud and WIN THAT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE!!!

GO EAGLES! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

Santa's Gonna Need a Bigger Sleigh!

First, good job Wylie Bulldogs! Second, good luck Abilene Eagles!

Now, on to the sleigh issue. I was out doing some Christmas shopping this past weekend, with all three of my girls wish lists in hand. It's amazing how differently they handle the process of preparing a list. Three different personalities, three different lists. Katie, my 16 year old, merely took a scratch piece of paper and wrote out her list. She had a total of nine items on her list. What could she possible need? She has a computer, an iPhone, TV, car, and every other electronic device. Her list consists of shoes, books, money and we can't forget the DVR for her room. I guess she doesn't have every electronic device.

Delaney is 14, and her list shows her creative side. You have to see it to believe it; but I will try to describe it to you. Her list is two pages. WOW! BUT...there are only seven items on it. She took pictures of the things she wants off of the internet and pasted the images into a Word document and then printed it off for me. It even has a title - "Delaney's Parent/Santa Wish List for Christmas '09." I know...you are dying to know what is on her list. For those of you who know Delaney, you know that there is a purse on her list. However, what you don't know is there are THREE purses on her list (and they ain't cheap!). She says she does not want them all (WHATEVER!); she is just making suggestions. She gets her love of the purse from her mom, and I am not ashamed to admit I have a problem. Hey, admitting you have a problem is the first step! The other items on her list are the typical shoes, jewelry and gift cards. Oh...and an iPhone!

I have saved the best for last. My eight year old, Elle Belly! Her list also has a title - "Elle's Christmas List 2009." I think her big sister helped her with that title. Her list is hand written on a piece of notebook paper. Here is where the bigger sleigh comes into play. SHE HAS 24 ITEMS ON HER LIST!!!! She is eight! What could she possibly need? I will not take the time to list them all here...I will just give you a few highlights.
1. Betty razor scooter or the other scooter
2. computer
3. phone (really?)
5. volleyball net for the pool (because we are going to swim on Christmas day)
7. camo walkie talkies
8. puppy (I guess the three in the back yard don't count)
12. American Girl clothes and all the other stuff
14. iPode tutch (her spelling)
16. bike (the one on the patio that she has NEVER ridden is not good enough)
18. chair
24. clothes

I would love to get her everything on this list and I am sure Santa would, too. However, what would she put on her birthday list in four months?

While shopping, I ran into a couple of friends that asked to see the lists. I can still hear their laughter after seeing Elle's. They of course, know her, and would not expect anything less of her. God love her! So, I am off to help Santa buy a new sleigh. I wonder if he will get a 2010 model or if the 2009 models are on sale? Hey, even Santa likes a bargain!

Happy shopping!

Crazy World We Are Living In!

I watched a bit of Barbara Walter's "Most Fascinating People of 2009", and I have to say I was a bit unimpressed by the list of peeps. But the criteria to make that list are not the criteria that defines fascinating for me. I can't believe Tiger Woods didn't make "the cut" (get it, used a golf term there), but then again I'm sure BW had already taped this wasted hour of tv before Mr. Woods had his "fascinating" meltdown. Wow, it's quite a world we are living in, isn't it?

Fascinating people to me are the people who live right here under my roof (believe me they can fascinate me in ways I could never dream of! I'm sure you've got some of your own fascinating little peeps in your household). My dear friends and complete strangers fascinate me when I hear and/or see the awesome deeds they do that go completely unnoticed and without fanfare! It goes without saying but of course I will...Our military completely fascinates me!!! But the most fascinating being of them all is the good Lord above who knocks my socks off every single day! So be on the lookout on how the simplest of things that your loved ones, friends and even strangers will do that fascinate you. And definitely be watching for what God will do because fascination is what he does daily and HE far outweighs any person on any list Barbara Wa Wa can come up with!

Traditions

This is the time of the year when traditions start and continue. Everybody has traditions. Some people stay in bed on Saturday mornings while watching cartoons with their children. Others cook the same meal full of family favorites for Christmas each year. Still other families have a weekly family game night (THIS I would recommend!). One of the many traditions that my husband Cactus and I have is our annual trip to the National Finals Rodeo and the Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas. This year, is the third year for this tradition. We go on this trip with two other couples; one from Atlanta and one from Ojai, California. However, you would be surprised how many other people that we know attend this event. Our agenda includes one night at the rodeo, eating, a day EACH at the three HUGE convention centers full of shopping, eating, a day at the outlet mall in Primm, eating, a show or two, eating, oh...and we do gamble! Did I mention that we eat?! This year was the first year that we attended the opening night of the rodeo. It was AMAZING! Elvis was there performing...at least I think it was Elvis. Too hard to tell from up in the nosebleed section. Now I know why we wait until the second week to go.

The next night we decided to lay low and go to dinner at one of my favorite Italian food restaurants, Ferraro's. One of the things that I like best about this restaurant, is the fact that it is a local favorite OFF the strip. Which translates into great food. Cactus says that the Osso Bucco is ALMOST as good as mine. The atmosphere reminds me of an old Dean Martin movie, right down to a Mafia feel and the "family" table. There is also a piano bar that serves the most delicious martini's. You can even dance or sing along with the band.

Night three was a blast to the past for me. We went to see Donny & Marie! I was sooo hoping to get to meet them, especially Donny. I need to get some pointers from him on how to win Dancing with the Abilene Stars. Hey, if you want to win, you must learn from the best! What a great performance! Marie looked great...Donny looked HOT...they both danced amazing and were so funny! I honestly was surprised at how much energy they both had. They performed for about an hour and a half, and then had a SECOND show! I wish I could have so much energy.

Last, but certainly not least...we went to see Brooks & Dunn. Talk about energy! WOW! We thought we were attending the beginning of their farewell tour, but actually, it was the last night of their current tour! That was almost as special. It was their last night to EVER perform at the Las Vegas Hilton. You know, Ronnie Dunn attended both Abilene Christian and Hardin-Simmons, right here in Abilene, Texas, USA. He was asked to leave ACU or stop performing in the honky tonks. Good thing he gave up his education! Kix Brooks is the energy and Ronnie is the straight man. Both have wonderful voices. It was truly an unforgettable experience!

I am now home, but just barely. Of course, if you have read my previous blogs, you know that if it is going to happen while travelling, it will happen to the Schroeder's. I truly believe that Cactus is the problem. Here's why...Cactus had to go to New Guinea before this trip, so he met me in Las Vegas. I arrived without a delay, turbulence, screaming kid, hot plane, or any other travelling disaster. We travelled back to Abilene, together. Guess what?! Our flight from LV to DFW was delayed about 30 minutes and then our flight from DFW to Abilene was cancelled. Luckily, there was ONE LAST flight into Abilene. We got on it and were getting ready to board, when the gate agent advised us to say a prayer we get to leave. UGH! I prayed and my prayer was answered, thank goodness! So...home sweet home!

I can't wait to see what this tradition brings us next year! I am just glad we have good friends and good traditions, which make great memories that last a lifetime! Take the time to think about your own traditions or maybe it is time to start a new one!

Making memories!

OOPS!

It's 11:30pm and almost forgot to blog.

Erin and I made a promise that she would blog on Mondays and I would on Thursdays so we would be held more accountable to doing this. And Erin even gave me last Thursday off from blogging due to it being Turkey Day. So there really is no excuse for letting today go by. Just got busy, busy, busy!

However, I really had every intention on blogging last Thursday, but I was out of town at a swanky resort spa that my in-laws took us to and the dang place was going to charge to hook up to the internet! REALLY!!! I'm sorry, but I do believe that should be included in the room rate... the outrageous room rate I might add (eventhough I had nothing to do with paying, because I have awesome in -laws)! Anyway... not that the daily internet hook-up charge cost an exhorbitant amount, it's just the principle. I think those little things should be included! Don't you? It's kind of right up there with all the airlines charging for extra bags! Oh the insanity of it all. But not Southwest Airlines...Don't you just love their new ad campaign? Ok got off track there...kind of like my life right now. I'm running in 24 directions and trying to find the time to fit it all in. However, I do know of one thing I must fit in and that is SLEEP! I've been lacking in that department and must fit more of it in. I promise a better blog next Thursday. Lots has happened...in fact...funny, silly, goofy stuff...you'll just have to stay tuned. Speaking of staying tuned in....be sure and catch us on our internet radio show on Tues & Thurs 1-2pm CST. Just go to www.highvoltageradio.com on those days and see what we are gabbin' about. But for now, this gal is off to snoozin'.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Don't be Jealous...He's ALL Mine!

Thanksgiving has come and gone, but the turkey lingers! Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season. There's shopping, eating, shopping, cards to get out, eating, shopping, wrapping, parties, eating, family; oh...did I mention shopping and eating? It's a vicious cycle. Thousand of people headed out EARLY on Black Friday to see if they could take advantage of the awesome deals that retailers were offering. My children even left the coziness of their beds at 7:30 AM to brave the crowds. Me? I slept in. Cactus? He went hunting. Don't worry...Cactus and I did venture out to help stimulate the economy. He bought my Christmas present early. I know! What man buys their wife their present a month before Christmas? A cheap, (I mean thrifty) one does. I have been asking for a new washer and dryer for about 3 years. I have asked for mother's day, valentine's day, my birthday, anniversary and Christmas. I even asked for them on Cactus' favorite holiday...the first day of hunting season. NOTHING! They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. That is wrong. It's his wallet. Cactus saw an ad for 50 percent off of a washer and dryer set. I can see the wheels in his mind turning. If he purchases these, not only will he be finished with his shopping, but I will get off of his back about buying a new washer and dryer. It's a WIN-WIN! So, purchase we did.

But wait! It does not stop there. Cactus thought I needed something besides the washer and dryer. He is such a giver. You might want to sit down for this one, if you aren't already. He also bought me...TIRES! I know! You are green with envy! I don't know how he will top this next year. Maybe I will get that kitchen remodel I have been asking for. Patience paid off with the washer and dryer. Stranger things have been known to happen.

Happy Shopping (and eating and shopping and eating)!

Erin

Desk Building 101

For those of you who know my husband Cactus, you know that he is one of the smartest men around. He owns a successful oil and gas company along with raising exotic deer. He has a wonderful sense of humor, is great at grilling and loves to spend time with our three daughters, along with many other talents. However, every person has a thing or two that they are NOT good at. One of those things for him is technology. I lovingly refer to him as "technotarded". The other activity that he is not good at is building things. I did not realize this until one Christmas when Katie was almost two. We had purchased a Little Tykes car that needed assembly. He informed me that he does not put things together. YIKES! What to do? I started to put it together and suddenly could not figure out the next step. Luckily, I am surrounded by friends who are willing to help, or just feel sorry for me! So, a friend came over and Viola! the car was built. Cactus was happy he did not have to build it and Katie was happy she had wheels!

Through the course of the next 14 years, I have built patio furniture, bookcases, basketball goals, and the list goes on and on. This past weekend, I decided it was time to put the little white student desk together that I had bought for Elle weeks ago. Did I ask Cactus to help? Noooooo. Delaney offered to help. So, Saturday afternoon, the build began. First, we had to decide where the desk was going to go in her room. Finally, after rearranging twice, we decided on a layout. We excitedly dove into the building process! We laid out all the pieces in the order that they were to be used; made sure we had all the parts and got all the tools we needed. Piece C is joined to piece B by pieces G and H. CHECK! Next, on piece A, place this screw thing into this plastic thing and slip in the wood thing. WHAT?!!!! There is no plastic thing and the diagram is so small, I could not even tell what I was suppose to do. Delaney and I ponder our next step. We can go back to the store where I purchased the desk and ask them to replace the "broken" part, ask Cactus to help (we had a weak moment), trash the whole project and find a desk already put together, or...call Nester to help. Needless to say, we go with option #4. Nester is a handy man that has worked for us for years. He fixes things at the ranch, at our house, and at our rental properties. And...he BUILDS! Nester to the rescue! I do ask Cactus to make the phone call to Nester, which he willingly does. So, I guess the moral to this story is...I don't have to build everything, I just have to call Nester to build everything. Gotta go! Someone is at my front door! I bet it's Nester.

Happy Building!

Erin

I'm back. It was Nester. It took him only about 20 minutes to complete the desk. I have included a picture of Elle with her new desk. See how happy she is?

Thankful Thursday

Okay, I said that I would be the one that would blog on Thursdays so here it is. However, next Thursday being Turkey Day, I am asking for time off to be with the family. Hope that is okay with everyone.

Therefore, that is why I am calling this Thursday ... Thankful Thursday...in honor of Thanksgiving. I have loads to be thankful for...such as family, friends, job, husband's job, etc. etc. Please let me know what you are thankful for. I would so love to hear. Even the smallest of details...i.e. the kids took out the trash. Right? Man on Man am I ever thankful for that especially when I don't have to keep asking over and over for that certain kid whose chore that is to take the trash out! Ha! Please let me know. It's the small things that I am truly thankful for. Please share yours!!! I probably will share them on our radio show next Tuesday so be sure and tune in! Happy Thursday and Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

"Just 5 More Minutes"

YUP! That's all I was wanting this morning....Just 5 more minutes of glorious slumber! Oh, I got it and then some ... 30 minutes more!!! It kind of set the tone for the rest of my day and not in a good way!

When I decided that I needed just 5 more minutes, my alarm (NOT ME, of course not) forgot to reset itself! How dare that alarm clock. Anyway, Thank God for a daughter who knows how to get herself up, fix her own lunch, and be ready for carpool by 7am! Wish I could say the same for the boy in my house, but.........let's just say his talents lie elsewhere.

Anyway, as I stated earlier, it pretty much set the tone for my Wednesday! When carpool was gracious enough to pick up the other boys in order to pick mine up last to give him more time, I thought AWESOME and THANK YOU ANGIE! No need to take child to school when it's not my carpool day! This is huge people!!! We moms cherish those mornings! Don't we ladies? Anyway, I start thinking I'll get to all my "doings" after a relaxing cup of Joe, little bit of GMA, yada, yada, yada ... BAD MOVE! Because that darn, unreliable clock of mine starting racing, and I suddenly realized I had some important documents that had to be printed and delivered before 2pm. Why 2pm you ask? Because out of the blue I realize...IT'S EARLY RELEASE DAY!!! Of all days, why today! Oh well...No problem I say to myself. So I finish working on these documents and go to hit print! You need to know a minor, but very important part of this story at this juncture... I have been living on borrowed time with a printer that has needed a new toner cartridge for quite awhile! The old saying "Never put off to tomorrow, what could be done today" was starting to sarcastically sing to me! I was hating that little diddy right about this moment! Printing was not gonna happen. With the clock ticking and me trying to decide my next step, another diversion comes into my day.... I get a phone call that required my immediate attention and an errand that ate up about 30 minutes. I get back home and try to decide what to do about the printer when 2nd phone call comes in from dear ole Cracker. (Our last name is Graham...get it...Cracker. My endearing nickname for hubby. I'm Saltine...I know TMI) Anyway, he has taken his car into the shop and needs me to pick him up and take him back to work!!! REALLY??? Why do you guys not ask a bud at work to help with these sort of errands. I even asked him this all important question. His response was that he decided to do this errand after he had already left work for lunch and realized this was a good time to do this chore. REALLY??? What if I wasn't available is what I asked! Poor Cracker...he profusely apologized and had no idea the day I was having. I do however want you husbands to know something...we wives (working outside of the home or not....I do work and happen to office out of my house) are not at home eating bon bons by the pool all day, all though I must take up this task immediately! Sorry for digressing ~ Back to story ~ I pick up hubby and"floor" it back towards his office all the way complaining and whining about my day and that I only have an hour left to get this important task done when he asks ..."Can you run through somewhere so I can get some lunch?" REALLY??? This is when I threw in the towel and just had to laugh!

Moral of story... Make dang sure you reset your alarm clock if you want that extra 5 minutes! It will most definitely either make or break your day! Also, make sure to plan for those unexpected diversions that are ALWAYS going to occur when you least expect it. Also, when the toner goes out of your printer...DON'T WAIT...REPLACE IMMEDIATELY! And yes....I admit it....this day was not my clock's fault, Cracker's fault, printer's fault and not even early release day's fault....It's all mine! And just if your curious...I made it to Office Depot to buy cartridge, printed documents and delivered them by 1:59! It's got to be 5:00 somewhere, because that's where I'm headed!

The Schroeder's Annual Shut ya' up Trip

For my non-hunter followers, let me explain exactly what the "Shut ya' up Trip" is. Almost twenty years ago, I married a hunter and gatherer. Not being from a hunting family, this was quite an adjustment for me. From getting use to Cactus being gone A LOT, to cooking the daily kill. I adjusted quicker to the cooking side than to the being gone side. Hunting season for us begins September 1st and ends the end of April, with spring turkey. March is a non-hunting month, which is why we were married and had our three children's birthdays within 12 days of each other (I'll save that story for another blog). About 8 years into our marriage, I guess Cactus got tired of my complaining (that's what he calls it, I call it discussing), and decided that I might not "discuss" as much, if he spent a little one on one time with me. So...the "Shut ya' up Trip" was born. Every August we take a 5 day/4 night trip to the destination of MY choice. Our most frequented locations have been Las Vegas, San Antonio and San Diego. This year, I picked San Diego. It was FABULOUS! The weather was cool and breezy, the food was amazing and the racetrack was AWFUL! The first day I did great; the second day I listened to my very intelligent husband and DID NOT WIN A RACE! Won't do that again! This is a wonderful time for us to reconnect with each other, not only before hunting season, but before school starts and the madness begins. I recommend every couple spend quality time together, whether it is a special trip, or date night in your hometown.

Cactus once asked me why I still "discuss" after he has taken me on a fabulous trip. I told him just try and not take me one year and see how bad the "discussing" gets!

Happy hunting!

Momsense...LIVE!

As most of you know, I am an independent consultant for Southern Living at HOME. Not only does my job allow me to work from home while earning an income, I have met the most incredible women in the world. I just returned from my 7th annual convention with the company. For the second time, the convention was at the BEAUTIFUL Gaylord Texan. As with any convention, there is so much to learn and soak up. We have general sessions during the morning and break-out sessions in the afternoon. My mind is spinning with all of the information I received. Let's see how well this old sponge can remember it all!

I am continually amazed at how incredible these events are. Southern Living at HOME spares no expense. The first morning, there is always a grand entrance put on by corporate. These are always extremely entertaining and HILARIOUS! After all, these people are business people, not actors, dancers or comedians. I guess this year they realized this, so they brought in outside entertainment. Can you guess who? You guessed it - Anita Renfroe!!!! I about fell out of my chair (and I was on the FRONT ROW!!!!!). Just that morning, I had asked my friend Katiebeth if she had ever seen the Momsense video. And then not an hour later, as we sit in the general session, out she comes. She performed for about 45 minutes; but I could have listened to her all day! She has a new book out titled "Don't Say I Didn't Warn You" that I bet is a must read. To learn more about this incredibly entertaining woman, check out her website at www.anitarenfroe.com. On her website are video posts of some of her concerts. Or you can check her out on YouTube.

The last event of the convention is the awards gala. This years entertainment was the adorable Cactus Cuties from Lubbock, Texas. These four young ladies sang Amazing Grace and the National Anthem and there was not a dry eye in the room. You can also check out these cuties on YouTube.

I hope you enjoy these videos as much as I enjoyed them LIVE!

Happy Birthday, Sissy!

Yesterday was my sister's birthday. Even though it was HER birthday, I received a wonderful gift. I sent her a Smilebox card (which by the way, if you have not used this Hallmark service, check it out). After opening it, she sent me an e-mail thanking me and telling me what a wonderful birthday she was having. Later that evening, I called her to tell her happy birthday. Hearing the happiness in her voice was my gift. You see, for over 18 years she was in a very unhappy relationship. They broke up, got back together, planned a wedding, called it off, and the cycle continued for 18 years. She always appeared to be happy on the outside, but I knew that inside she was miserable. I won't bore you with the details, but just to let you know, she finally had had enough and one morning realized that she could not be herself around him. She decided to call it quits for good! I could see an immediate change in her. More than anything, Sissy had always wanted to get married and have children. She even took Elle one time for a WHOLE MONTH! She kept coming up with excuses not to bring her back. Shortly after ending her relationship with "him", she met her current husband. Jeff is wonderful and has two great kids (a boy and a girl). She was so happy that she could be herself with him. She loves his kids and they love her. They dated for about a year and then in March of 2008, they got married. Sissy had her perfect family. This also made me happy. What Sissy does not know (but probably does after reading this), is that I cried for her many times, wanting her to have what I had...a loving husband and three (sometimes) wonderful children. My life is not perfect and we have our differences, but I would not change it for anything. So...now after hearing about her wonderful birthday and the happiness in her voice, it felt like I had received a birthday gift.

Wishing you all Happy Birthdays!

When the cats away...the mice will....

HAVE A WRECK! Yes, my oldest daughter had her first car accident last Friday. I am sure it is the first of many, as she has only been driving by herself for 2 1/2 months. Cactus and I had to take Delaney to College Station for a tennis tournament and Katie decided to stay home and work.

When I arrived at the hotel about 4:15, my phone rang. I knew the minute I heard Katie say "Mom", that this was not going to be good. It's a mother's instinct. I think I might have even known when I saw her number on my phone. You know...because they only call if they want something or are in trouble! She said she was travelling on the loop and a girl was getting on and did not yield to her. She sandwiched Katie between her car and a truck in the next lane. It could have been a VERY serious accident; especially for an inexperienced driver. Katie handled it well. After ending up in the bar ditch, she called me. I first made sure that no one was hurt and then told her to call 911 and stay there until the police arrived.

I then thought that she does not know what questions to ask and she can some times be a little bold (I know...where does she get it?). So, I called my friend Jeri Lyn. She owns Rhinestone Ranch, which is just across the loop. She quickly went to Katie's aid. Luckily, there was a witness that stayed to talk to the police officer. Thank you! The other girl was issued a citation. After Katie returned home, she called me and was shocked that people don't follow the rules. You see, Katie is a rule follower; not a minder of her parents - there is a difference. I explained to her it is unfortunate and that she should stick to her rule following (and maybe even throw in some parent minding...oh, and room cleaning).

I am thankful that everyone is fine (thank goodness she has a SUV). Her passenger side was crunched from bumper to bumper, but it is already at the shop getting repaired as I blog. Katie was a little shaken up for a couple of days and I felt helpless being 4 hours away. I wanted to take her and wrap my arms around her and comfort her the way I use to do when she was little. I guess this is a life lesson. Our children grow up. As much as they act like they do not need us; they do, occasionally. Katie is so mature, that I sometimes forget that she is ONLY 16! I will always be there for my girls. Whether it be on the phone, in person or sending a person in my place. I will do everything I can to help them through the tough times. And, Katie probably thought this was the end of the world. Oh, but just wait for that first love, Button!

Keep on truckin'!

Little House on the Prairie (circa 2009)

I am about to date myself...so, here goes. Remember the episode of Little House on the Prairie, where there is a tornado and Laura is walking to the storm cellar, but she can hardly stand up because the wind is so strong? No? Well, never mind. Last night in Abilene, we had severe thunderstorms, with a chance of tornadoes. Now, I hate to be too comfortable with my area, but I have lived in Abilene for 33 years and have NEVER been in a tornado. I lived in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for seven years and was in one. I think that Abilene is in a hole and nothing can reach us. VERY COMFORTING!!! So, when my husband came home and said that we needed to load up and head to the ranch (30 miles away) to avoid the severe weather, I thought he was crazy. But, to avoid a fight, I parked my car in the garage, loaded the girls up in my daughters' car, he loaded the dogs up into his truck and we headed east.

Lighting was all around us. Wind was whipping and the rain had started. AND, the sky was green. TORNADO GREEN! It was ERIE! The girls looked at it as an adventure. We arrived at the ranch and parked the cars in the barn. Let me tell you that I love to watch a storm roll in; from inside the comfort of my home. We ran inside and buckled down for the night. I poured myself a glass of wine and got ready to relax. Elle, Delaney and I were snuggling on my bed and watching TV when the power went out. All five of us gathered in the den and waited. We decided that if the power did not turn back on in 30 minutes, we would head back to town. Well, in the meantime, how do you entertain three children who are use to TV, cell phones, internet, cable and ELECTRICITY. Leave it to my eight year old to come up with a plan. We played a game where you name an animal that begins with every letter of the alphabet, beginning with A and ending with Z. It was sooooo nice to sit and visit with these girls and witness them help each other come up with an animal that starts with "n". Can you do it? However, 2008 came into play. Cell phones with internet. My oldest did not want to play this game; however, she is always up to any academic challenge where she will be top dog. Suddenly, she was rattling off so many animals for EVERY letter. She tried not to enjoy herself, but I think in the end she did.

Lesson learned - we need to get back to the simpler times in life. Maybe not everyday, but occasionally. I have found, that our family really comes together in adversity. Whether it be death, birth, personal issues or lack of electricity, the love of a family will always get you through. Laura Ingalls Wilder knew it...now so do the Schroeder's.

Keep the home fire's burning!

72 Years & Counting!

Today is a very special day in my life, and I wanted to share it with you just in case you needed a "pick me up" today!

It is my father's 72nd birthday. I know you are thinking...big deal, it's Nan's Dad's b-day. Well let me tell you why it's a big deal in my little piece of the universe. He was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) ~ known as Lou Gehrigs Disease to you and me ~ back around 1976 at 39 years of age. This disease attacks your nervous and muscular system and you basically become a prisoner within your own body. It does not affect your mind at all. Once diagnosed one usually lives 3 to 5 years. Mmmmmm, let's do the math. That was well over 30 years ago. Apparently, he does not have the full blown disease, but the medical community never gave him an exact name to what he had and still has. I choose to believe he is a miracle from God to teach me and others about grace, mercy, forgiveness and so much more.

His health has been in a slow and steady decline over the years, but his mental attitude has NEVER EVER wavered. AMAZING! As the old saying goes, ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING! Seeing what he has gone through, I'm not quite sure I would have the sweet, gentle, spirit that he has demonstrated over the years...another quality I think God gave him for the rest of us to see.

Life throws us all sorts of challenges. Some far worse than others. In fact, I've even been going through my own kind of challenge lately, but I always look to my hero and daily inspiration with his never give up attitude and think if he can do what he does on a daily basis with such a debilitating disease and NEVER COMPLAIN, then I certainly know I can do it!

If you are having a bad day, just know someone else out there is having a far worse one and perhaps a lifelong one. Go ahead and wallow a bit, but then pick yourself up and slowly start putting one foot in front of the other!

Happy Birthday Dad!
God so knew what he was doing when he picked you to be my earthly Father!

Senior Moments!

No...not senior as in citizen. Senior as in graduating from high school senior. About a week ago, Cactus and I, along with four other couples, hosted a swim party for one of my favorite Wylie High School Seniors. I have known Brooks since before he was born. Actually, his mom and dad and I became friends when his dad and I were put together as mixed doubles partners for a tennis tournament. His mother was 14 months pregnant (I swear, just ask her), so that's why I was paired with his dad. What a blessing for me! Chuck and Karla became such wonderful and loving friends to us. Friends that you do not have to talk to every day; but when you do talk, it's like you pick up right where you left off. When Brooks was born, I did not have the first clue what to do with a baby, much less a boy baby. Well, I quickly learned. He was PRECIOUS! I stopped by their house as often as I could to get my "fix." Three years later, Hunter arrived. Be still my heart. TWO boys? WOW! I often said that if I had boys I wanted them just like Brooks and Hunter. Well, God gave me three girls. By the way, I have mentioned to them to stay away from my girls!

Unfortunately, last February, the boys lost their father after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was only 56 years old. I can not imagine what the boys and Karla go through on a daily basis. So, when another friend asked if I wanted to help throw a graduation party for Brooks, of course I said "YES!" I wanted to do everything that I could to help him through this very difficult and bittersweet time in his life. And, of course, you know me...always up for planning a good party!

Brooks wanted a pool party with a 2 to 1 girl/guy ratio! His father would be so proud! After a little bit of planning, the hosts' came up with a fish fry with swimming, music and VIRGIN pina colada's and daiquiri's; oh and yes, the 2 to 1 girl/guy ratio! Brooks did not ask for much. In fact, he did not ask for anything. I decided that a good party favor would be personalized stadium cups. You would have thought that he was handed the golden ticket at Willa Wonka's Chocolate Factory. I overheard him saying, "They even had special cups made with my name on them!" It's the little things that make them happy. He deserves so much more, but is such a gracious man that he saw the love that we all had for him.

So, I guess my point of this blog is that it does not take a lot to make our children happy. We think it does; but in reality all they really want is attention, patience, fish, pina colada's and personalized cups! Take the time to ask your kids about their lives. Find out what they want from you. You might be surprised that all they want is a 12 ounce, white, plastic stadium cup with their name on it.

I pray for the three of them (and the rest of their family) every day. They have an angel looking down on them. An angel I feel they share with me. Brooks says he is blessed...I am blessed for having them in my life for the past 19 years!

Here's to the first day of the rest of your life!

Out of the mouths of babes...or 8 year olds!

Last Tuesday, I had to go to Midland with Cactus for an AAPG meeting. Jealous, are you...just wait. The meeting is not the point. Anyway, now that Katie is driving, I don't need a "nanny" to taxi my kids around. So...I asked Cactus' secretary to arrive at our house about 10 p.m., and spend the night. She, of course, agreed as this is in her job description. She probably looks back now and wished that she had not agreed to "children" under the heading "Duties and Responsibilities."

Before Mary's arrival, my cell phone rang and it was Elle crying hysterically. She said that Katie had gotten mad at her and had sent her to her room without dinner. As a mom, I try not to take the youngest child's side. You know, they are so cute, and all. So, I asked to speak to Delaney. Delaney is the fairest, most level headed child you will ever meet. I figured that she would shot straight with me. She told me that Katie had come home with dinner and a surprise for Elle. Katie had asked Elle to stay in the other room while she showed the surprise to Delaney. Of course, as any curious, eight year old would do, she followed them. This upset Katie and she sent her to her room without dinner. I then got Katie on the phone and told her that the punishment did not meet the crime. She should have either told Elle to leave the room or not given her the surprise. I know...you are all thinking...this is what happens to me when I get on the phone with my BFF. The children appear out of nowhere and park on the couch and stare at you until you either end your conversation or yell at them to leave. This to me is not a "go to your room without dinner" crime. I also explained to Katie that just because she is the oldest and quasi in charge, she is not God.

After calming everyone down, I told all three of them that if I received a bad report from Mary, that I would put them all up for adoption and live alone with their father. I think the aspect of me living alone with their father shocked them the most. Hey...he was currently the only one not on my bad list. Well...guess what? I received a bad report. I then reminded them that the adoption was in full swing and to get ready to vacate the house. I tend to forget how literal young children can be.

Next thing I know, four mothers from Elle's school have notified me that their children have come home from school and proclaimed that Elle's parents no longer want her, she has been put up for adoption and she is moving in with them. Oi Vie! This turn of evens happened while I was in St. Louis. Elle called me and said the "Randy" was building her a bed, but that it might not be ready by Monday and that she might need to stay at "my" house a little longer until the bed is complete. I then explained to Elle that what I said was in jest and that I was not serious. I felt like she understood, since she then told me that she had bought me a lovely Mother's Day present.

After responding to the half a dozen plus e-mails regarding this incident, I am quite blessed to have many friends in my life that love my child and are willing to "adopt" her. They also all "got it", when I mentioned to them what had happened. I guess we can all remember the time growing up, that we were upset with our home life and packed a bag and moved out. It also made me realize that everyone gets upset with their children and that maybe mine aren't so bad, if almost 5 families are willing to adopt my baby...my 8 year old!

Hug your kids today! Happy Mother's Day!

ALERT: Do NOT Travel with me!

For those of you who know me, the Schroeder's are what you would call travelling impaired. Allow me to explain.

Here I sit on a bus travelling from Abilene to Dallas/Ft. Worth International airport to catch a flight to St. Louis. Why? Because the flight that I was originally booked, on at 9:35 this morning, was delayed until 11:00 a.m., for mechanical difficulties. Then, the 11:00 flight was delayed until 3:00 for mechanical difficulties. HMMM! I see a pattern that I do not like. Why am I travelling to St. Louis? I am taking my 14 year old daughter to play tennis. How exciting, you say!? So far it has been and she hasn’t even picked up a racquet, yet. If this is her warm-up, I don’t think I want to see the main attraction. We were supposed to be in St. Louis by 1:00 p.m.; now, I think that we arrive about 8:30 p.m.

We are travelling with a group of 4 kids (3 girls, 1 boy – lucky boy!), 3 parents and 1 coach. All, by the way do get hungry. Our fearless leader suggested we all go to the restaurant at the airport and get something to eat before loading the bus. Guess what? They closed the restaurant down LAST WEEK!!!! I guess its chips and soda from the Buffalo Gap Traders Post located in the airport, which by the way is run by our good friend Tonya Vinson. But wait…I call my wonderful husband to ask him if he could bring me my “happy pills”, which I thought I could do without, until this happened. He then offered to bring hamburgers to us to eat on the bus. Did you know that there are not bus attendants for drink service? Boy do I need one now! Kick-in, happy pill! Kick-in!

So, thank you to the wonderfully patient agents at the Abilene Regional Airport, to these wonderful children who look at this as an adventure and whom I hear laughing at the back of the bus, and to my loving husband who went out of his way to make sure that his wife (and the other 7 travelers) was both happy and not hungry. This adventure is not over, but I don’t know what is in store…so, keep checking back. It could get interesting!

Signed,

I am living in a Lonestar video! (Mr. Mom)

...Pamper smell in the Maytag dryer...crayons go up one drawer higher...rewind Barney for the 15th time...bubblegum in the baby's hair...sweet potatoes in my lazy chair...We've all been there at one time or another. Well, Tuesday was my day. I will give you the Reader's Digest version (you are welcome, Nan!). Returned Monday afternoon from a weekend in San Antonio watching my 14 year old play tennis. She did AWESOME!!! Promised family I would cook Osso Buco for dinner on Tuesday. Found out Tuesday morning that I had a tennis match that night at 8 p.m. Helped wrap 200 chocolate s'more kits for a wedding. Picked up food for a networking meeting at lunch and attended said meeting. Began preparing the Osso Buco at 2:45. At three o'clock, second grader's teacher reminded me that she had an Earth Day project due the next day. "No problem!" I say, with a smile. Think, think, think. Note to self...ask Delaney for creative ideas. My head was beginning to hurt. Returned home to finish preparing Osso Buco. Realized that I did not have brandy. What Irish/German Catholic family does not have Brandy?! Dash to liquor store. Five o'clock, finish preparing dinner to put in oven for 2 hours. Six o'clock, remember that I had not talked to Delaney's doubles partner's parents about the tournament in May. Deadline is midnight. Six-thirty. Talked to parents and they inform me that their daughter is NOT going to play with Delaney in May. Did I put all of that Brandy in the Osso Buco? Start calling other tennis parents to find a partner. Serve dinner to my wonderful, appreciative family. Leave instructions for husband and children on how to finish the Earth Day project. Give husband number of potential tennis partner and ask him to contact her if she has not called by 8 p.m. Head to courts. Play like I had never picked up a racket before (sorry, Missy!). Call home at 9:30 and am informed that husband has gone to bed and no one knows if there is a doubles partner. Get home...no doubles partner. So...she'll just play singles. Check out Earth Day project...WRONG! How are the birds suppose to get to the bird feed if there is not a HOLE in the feeder?!(aka plastic milk jug). Fix project. Drink wine. Drink wino. drunk vine...Oh...sorry! Go to bed. New day on Wednesday. Looking good! COFFEE POT CATCHES ON FIRE!!!!!

STILL NAIVE AT 40-SOMETHING!

I guess, or rather I KNOW, I am still so naive! You would think I was still around 12 years old, because I still think that there is good in everyone and everything! Even with the events that happened to occur to me and my gabbin' gal business partner Erin on this glorious day of all days....April Fools Day....I still believe in the good! I want to believe in the good and will continue to do so! Good days ahead for sure. I know most of you have no idea what I am talking about and that is probably a good thing. But for those of you who do, you know what I am talking about. Anyhow, ALWAYS look for the good and best in everyone. Try VERY HARD to do this and if you can't find any good, then MOVE ON! Which is what we did! Don't waste time on things that don't matter, because life is short enough anyway. So my mantra today and ever more is to love the "peeps" you're with, love the "peeps" you have yet to meet and continue to love the "peeps" that have gone on to the great beyond and are laughing hysterically saying ..."GIRL, are you kidding me??? You are SO WASTING YOUR TIME even thinking about it!"

Now go and gab with the the ones that mean the most!
Nan

Senior Moment!

I have decided that laughter is in fact the best medicine. Just like every Sunday, Cactus and I took the girls to lunch. They picked Taco Bueno. We order our food and grab a table. When Cactus sits down and lays the receipt on the table, I just take a quick glance to see what our number is and notice two words at the bottom of the receipt..."Senior Discount". I ask if the cashier asked him about being a senior and he said that she had not; she must have just giving it to him. Insert laughter here! I laughed so hard, I swear my make-up ran. And to think that I was not feeling that great today!

Hope you laugh today!

I LOVE What I Do!

I am a woman who wears many hats. Wife, mom, sister, friend and business owner. I love all my "jobs". Sometimes, all of my hats are on my head at the same time. Yesterday was a good example of that. One of my businesses is I am a Senior Consultant for Southern Living at HOME. Since just recently losing 40 pounds, I needed a new picture for my website (www.southernlivingathome.com/erinkschroeder). Well, my other business is co-publisher of Abilene Woman magazine. Through this venture, I have met many other wonderful business owners. One of them is Debbie Riggs of Pure Photography. I have one word for her - FABULOSITY!! She met me at Relics for a "photo shoot". She brought her wonderful husband Mark along, and you could feel the love and respect that those two have for each other. After patiently "shooting" her not so photogenic subject, she took on the next task of the day...photographing Nan and I for the next issue of our publication. This hat is so fun to wear. Nan and I have so much fun together and this is the third shoot that we have done with Debbie. We laugh until we cry. So yesterday, I wore four hats (the wife and mom hats are ALWAYS on), and loved every minute! To view our photo shoot, go to Debbie's website at www.pure-photography.com and they are posted on her blog. Hey...should Nan & I enter "America's Next Top Model"? NOT!!!

Life is Bittersweet!

At 40 years of age, I have finally experienced "bittersweet." I will make this short, for Nan. Today was a weird day in our household. Last night I knew that Elle was not feeling well, and it was confirmed today when she woke up, red cheeked and not concerned that she might not be able to spend the night away on Friday if she did not attend school on Thursday. In order not to interrupt Elle's sleep, I had the older two girls get a ride to school. My problem begins after school. Too many places to be and not enough drivers (dad is in Pennsylvania eating Hershey's chocolate!). Now that I have a driver in the house, this has eased up a bit. However, my anxiety with her driving has not. She is a very good driver. I am not a very good waiter. Katie had a tennis dinner this evening and at 10:15, I realized that she was not home, yet. Not for any other reason than I was watching Will & Grace on TV and got lost in the moment (that's a topic for another blog). I called her and told her that she needed to head home. Of course, she was already on her way...aren't they all? At that point I realized that I was sooo excited that she was driving, that I realized that her father and I had not gone over the "rules." The "rules", I might add, do not come about until you realize that as parents you have screwed up and have not gone over them with the teenager. Can you spell "PROBLEM"? All's well, Katie is our prototype. The other two do not have a chance. This is bittersweet...I am thrilled with the help that I am receiving in adding a driver into our house...but I am sad that I have now become my parents.

Why do I bother?

I know that I have said this a hundred times before...Men have SELECTIVE HEARING! I say it in jest, but I have decided that it is 100 percent true. It's genetic...and I am living with the master! At this point, I could go off on a tangent about the other male dominated traits, but I will keep this post on task. This morning, I sit down next to me WONDERFUL husband (and I do mean this from the bottom of my heart) and ask him a question. Now, I will admit that he was reading the paper and watching TV at the same time (I can't imagine). He, of course, does not respond the first time that I ask. I wait a minute and then I then yell his name...he turns to me and gives the pat answer of "yes, dear." I ask him if he heard my question and he says of course and proceeds to repeat it VERBATIM! I then ask him why he did not answer me when I asked the first time and he told me that he was reading the paper...so...he is now IGNORING ME! So, is it really selective hearing or just rudeness? He heard the question, he just chose to not answer it. This is a topic for another blog.

Fast forward to dinner tonight. We try to eat as a family as much as possible. Whether it is leftovers or firstovers. Tonight we ate a little late as the girls had tennis until 8 p.m. After everyone ate the wonderful meal that we both prepared (Cactus is an incredible griller!), he and I were talking about the events of the day. We were talking about things that are going on with our oldest daughter. He asked me a question and before I can answer the question he GETS OUT OF HIS CHAIR AND TURNS ON THE TV!!!!! He does not wait for my answer, he does not say excuse me, he does not pass GO...he just gets up and turns on the TV (we do not eat with the TV one). At this point, I think "I wish we had DVR." I also think that Nan and I are the only ones on the planet that don't have this tool. I somehow drag him back to reality and he says that he just wants to see what his show is about. I then start to clear the table. After a couple of minutes, I go and stand in front of him with my hands on my hips (I know you have all seen me do this) and wait for him to acknowledge me. I swear, I could have been standing there NAKED and he would not have noticed. Why do you ask? The show he was so interested in was CSI: Miami. There is a cute blonde that he can't wait to meet at a skeet shoot in April. I guess after 19 years of marriage and three children, I am not as distracting as I once was. Anyway, he said that he would finish this conversation in a minute...it is now 10:50, his show has been over for almost 2 hours; he has watched the news; packed for his trip; kissed me good night and I still have not answered HIS question about our oldest daughter.

You tell me...selective hearing or old age?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I think what I love most about a new year is it's a new, fresh start for everything in my life! But my main objective this year is becoming a better person in all my relationships ~ whether it's being a better mom, wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister, colleague, friend....just being better in all the wonderful relationships I am so fortunate to have been given in this life. I plan to cherish and to take really good care of each relationship that I have and to appreciate the new ones that I will be so lucky to encounter. Whatever your wishes are for the new year, be sure to include them with the special people in your life. It will make your journey that much sweeter!

Cheers to 2009! Be sure to make it SHINE!
